Leading up to the 2016 WNBA Draft in April, we’ll highlight the top 20 prospects that are set to go in the draft.
From the No. 16 Texas A & M Aggies, senior forward Courtney Williams consistently assists her team in capturing wins.
This season, Williams is averaging 14.3 points per game and has posted 200 points total for the season thus far. When it comes down to the team overall, she generally leads the team in scoring or comes a close second to the Aggies’ other top scorer senior Courtney Walker. Additionally, she has 36 assists for the season.
During the Aggies’ conference game opener against Georgia, Williams moved into the 10th spot on A&M’s career points list after passing Morenike Atunrase (2004-2008, 1,317 points). She currently has 1,324 career points.
Last season, Williams was the second in scoring in SEC games with 14.9 points per game. There were 23 games where she posted double-digit figures in the scoring column. The last ten of her high-scoring games came in the final match-ups of the season.
Aside from playing for the Aggies, Williams played for the U.S. women’s team during the 2015 Pan American games. She finally made the team after a third try.
Back in 2009, Williams first tried out for the USA Basketball squad. She then tried out in 2012 for the USA U18 National Team. Both times she was unsuccessful, but last summer’s trials finally gave way to her fruition.
Inside her trophy case, the senior forward is a two-time All-SEC selection. Most recently, she was named to the 2016 Naismith Trophy watch list.
The team overall has garnered an 11-3 record. Their wins include victories over No. 14 Duke, No. 16 Cal, and No. 17 Oklahoma. On the downside, two of the team’s three losses have come from ranked opponents including No. 11 Ohio State and No. 18 DePaul.
Williams comes into play when the Aggies need a big push. For example, between Williams and Walker, Texas A&M was able to push Duke into overtime in their Nov. 18 meeting. During overtime, Williams contributed shots and free throws to give the Aggies a 72-66 win over the Blue Devils.
During the Aggies’ Nov. 27 win over California at home, she led the team with 32 points. She managed to open the game on a seven-point run and posted a total of 12 of the Aggies’ 18 points in the first quarter.
As far as Williams’ fate for the 2016 WNBA Draft, her talents could wind up with the Atlanta Dream. For the Atlanta, the Dream have two first round picks following a three-way mid-season deal between the Minnesota Lynx and Chicago Sky last season.
If not for the Dream, she could also have the possibility of being scooped up by the Los Angeles Sparks since both the Dream and the Sparks lacked strong assists in the forward position this season.
Williams and the Aggies’ next game is at Arkansas January 7 at 7 PM.
