Report: Cavaliers, Celtics, Knicks Had ‘Preliminary Discussions’ About 3-Way Blockbuster That Probably Won’t Happen

In a report that’s fun to think about but almost certainly won’t happen, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News says there have been “preliminary discussions” about a three-team blockbuster that would send newly appointed NBPA vice president Carmelo Anthony to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kevin Love to the Boston Celtics.

Isola says the discussions began with the Cavaliers and Celtics talking about a Love trade, and then that expanded to involve the Knicks and Anthony, who has a no-trade clause and doesn’t seem to have much interest in leaving New York yet. In these supposed talks, Timofey Mozgov would to go the Knicks, along with draft picks (2016 Nets unprotected pick?!).

Those talks have reportedly gone nowhere, which is no surprise.

The Cavaliers/Celtics part of the report makes some sense given the fact that Boston is looking to trade for a star, and there’s been interest in Love in the past. Cleveland re-signed the power forward to a five-year max deal this past offseason, but he’s been disappointing at times this season. Cavaliers general manager David Griffin has said he has no intention of trading Love, but you never know.

The Anthony part adds a whole other layer of crazy to this trade rumor, and swapping out Love and Mozgov while bringing in Anthony, who’s 31 and dealing with knee problems, doesn’t really seem to move the needle. Although watching Melo, LeBron James and Kyrie Irving try to work things out offensively would be quite the sight.

So, yeah, don’t count on this happening. A Love trade would be a surprise in its own right, but this proposed three-way has almost no chance of going down.
